When my youngest was 3, I cut the tips of his pacifiers with scissors to create a small gap that made them less satisfying to suck on, without making it obvious what happened.

When he put one in his mouth, he made a face, then threw it in the toilet. Problem solved. Love how parenting knowledge evolves!
