Oh my GOD this is fiendishly clever! My only suggestion is to link to the article, not your subscribe page. I felt a little suckered when I got to the subscribe link instead of the story. I’m going to do some testing of the Medium algorithm and see which way works better (friend link vs newsletter link). But this approach will definitely be my fallback.
